Acro & Dance Test

As the bar is set higher than ever for dancers, Acro skills have become more and more commonplace in the competition world to show off power, flexibility and control. Tricks and skills are now more often seen in other styles too. Dancers that have Acro skills have strength and coordination unique to that craft, but they understand the importance of safety and trust and have a better concept of using their bodies with spatial awareness.

But, just as important as a dancer thats wants to show off a trick taking an Acro class, it is recommended for an Acro student to take another dance class to help with choreography and ensure smooth and seamless links between the skills and tricks, and so maximise the time during Acro itself to focus on the balance, strength and flexibility elements.

Following AAD, RAD, ISTD, NATD, Dancecor & Acrobatic Arts syllabuses, we offer our students –

Preparing for your session

Girls uniform

  • Babes – black capped sleeved leotard, black dance shorts and bare legs or black footless tights

  • Jewellery should be removed before class with valuables left at home, ideally

  • Bring a drink and snack for the class intervals
  • Students with a medical history or current conditions (including but not limited to seizures, neuromuscular, renal, cardiac, insulin/diabetic, pregnant or chronic skeletal problems, disorders or diseases) must seek doctors approval prior to participation

Studio Rules

  • It’s very important that students do not miss class, especially during exam and show rehearsals. If your child is ill/injured but well enough to come and watch, this is preferred rather than missing class altogether
  • Doors open 15 minutes before class, please arrive in uniform and ready to start the register 5 mins before class.
  • We are unable to take responsibility for students before or after the class times
  • Promptness is essential for students to participate fully in the warm up routines
  • Student who frequently have incorrect uniform or hairstyle will be asked to sit out and watch the class only.
  • Parents are not permitted to enter the studio or watch classes. Students will file out at the end of class, like at school.
  • We have a zero tolerance for bullying and offensive behavior will be dealt with appropriately
  • We demonstrate and use hands on spotting for technique corrections
  • Acro Dance Studios reserve the right to adjust the timetable, change class times and change teachers when necessary at any time.
  • Drinks and snacks are allowed in the changing room only
  • No food or fizzy drinks are permitted in the studio
  • No outdoor shoes are allowed on the studio floor
  • All bags and belongings are left in the changing room at your own risk
  • Car parking is available in the disc zone – 2 hour maximum
  • Photos and videos of students may be taken during studio sessions and may be used by Acro Dance Studios for promotions in publications, press articles, promotional material and websites
  • We follow strict government guidelines on Child Protection – please see the section containing our full policy
  • To protect our students that suffer with allergies, please do not bring any snack that contains nuts into the studio

From junior level upwards we strongly recommend Acro students to take another dance class

  • Term fees – three per annum that follow school terms – are a fixed price regardless of term length
  • A registration fee of £20 is payable to cover admin and secure a place, and is non-refundable. Please pay in cash (marked envelope) on your first session. A 2nd student registration is £15
  • Registration and payment fee must be received in advance to guarantee a space before the start of each term. 10 % will be added for a late payment
  • Payment can be made in cash (in marked envelope) or by online transfer
  • No refunds will be made due to absent because of illness or holidays, or if a student does not return to class part way through a term
  • In the unlikely event of any class cancellations due to teacher illness, extreme weather or any other unforeseen circumstances, we will either provide an extra class or offer to amend fees for the following term

We have spent a lot of time integrating our parent/student portal, which is really invaluable. Once you’ve registered your portal is active, you will see recent communications, emails sent and general announcements, as well as your account details, including any fees that are due or payments completed. In addition you can add your child to any upcoming workshops or new classes. Or even add your details into the database for adult class enrolments.  To login to the portal simply click here. Show Time

The opportunity to perform in a staged showcase is very exciting, empowering & confidence building. Students learn about theatre, rehearsals, teamwork, commitment and enjoy showing their skills in a professionally run production. And it’s a wonderful way for family and friends to see the fabulous progressions and hard work the students have put in. All students are to take part.

In alternative years, all of our students will perform in our smaller studio show, which takes place at Ballakermeen High School, and the following year our big show at the Gaiety Theatre. One is a presentation of class and exam skills, with a taster of show dances, whilst the show stopper is full of fabulous costumes and polished performances. Additionally, our Peel-based GDA students will all get to take part in the GDA shows and performances.

To create a high standard of show, there are months of preparation and organisation so, once show rehearsals are underway, it is imperative that students do not pull out half way through the rehearsal period, as this will cause chaos to the choreography and cause disruption for their fellow students.

So commitment is key. And whilst we understand that children may want to try other activities and hobbies but we try to ask for total commitment until after the show.

Show fee

Each student must pay the extra fee in order to take part in any show, which is usually £5 for the smaller show and £20 for Gaiety show. This covers extra show costs, studio and theatre rehearsals & insurance and licences.

Gaiety Shows

We always try to keep our costume costs to a minimum for you by shopping around early and being creative but, generally, each costume for these shows will cost between £35 and £65. We also have sponsors and do other fundraising, which helps us subsidise any costumes above this price.

The show fee is £20 and is due 9 months prior to the show.

We offer a 5 month payment ‘pay off’ period prior to the costume fee deadline, which means you can pay a set amount each month or pay a lump sum whenever you can, or pay in full before the deadline – usually 6/7 months prior to the show.

If your payment isn’t received by the deadline, your child’s costumes cannot be ordered and may result in them being pulled from the show, which will cause chaos within the classes due to re choreographing and spending money on props that are no longer needed.

The number of dances your child will perform are as follows:

  • Babes class one: 1 dance (first half only)
  • Babes class two: 1 dances plus the Finale Dance
  • Junior Acro: 1 dance plus the Finale Dance
  • Junior Dance: 2 dances plus the Finale Dance
  • Inters Acro: 1 dances plus the Finale Dance
  • Inters Dance: 3 dances plus the Finale Dance
  • Each grade of Ballet: 1 dance each plus the Finale Dance
  • Mix Junior and Inters Acro 1 extra dance
  • Auditions will be held for the interval finale dance
  • There is also the possibility of children doing an extra solo or duet.

Ballakermeen show

Our smaller show is a taster for the big Theatre show, so we keep the costume fees to £25 per dance. Anything over this price, we will cover through our sponsorship and other fundraising.

We require help backstage from mums to chaperone the children during the dress rehearsal and shows.

Group photo shoot for the show program

All pupils are required to attend a photo shoot 2/3 months prior to the show. Costumes will be handed out the week before the shoot to enable students to arrive ready. Full makeup and show hair is required.

Students should be dropped off 5 mins before time and use Studio 2 as the entrance and exit. Any costume adjustments can then be made at home ready for the theatre.

Exam Time

Exams are a positive experience that encourage each student to work hard so they may achieve their personal potential and reach the technical requirement of each level. All exams are enjoyable, memorable and heighten self-esteem.

Each grade/level is designed specifically for enhancing students development at a safe pace in order to prevent injuries and form proper technique. Forcing flexibility and strength components before students are ready can cause long term negative effects. When entering students a number of factors are considered as well as flexibility and strength – maturity level, attention span, motor skills and co-ordination

Every student will receive a copy of the examiners notes and comments, and on passing will receive a graded certificate of their accomplishment.

Exams and medal tests

  • Hair – 2 braids crossed over at the bottom. No fly away bits, so gelled and hairspray. Students do get marked on appearance so please check our show video tutorial if not certain.
  • Makeup – not allowed for Babes, and only light blusher, clear lip gloss and mascara for Inters and over.
  • Girls Uniform – Intro, Prep & Grade 1 – black capped sleeved leotard. Grade 2 and up –  black capped sleeved leotard & black footless tights – all in top condition. Grade 3 and over can be a thinner strapped black leotard, supplied by Adeles Dance Wear. No Jewellery, Tattoos, Nail Vanish and No Underwear
  • Boys Uniform – Black biketard and black crew-neck top
  • AAD exam –  Enchainment and Theory books fee £10. Please revise at home and keep in perfect condition as, although the students keep them, they will hand to the examiner each year.
  • Exam times and fees will be confirmed by email in advance and with reminders.
  • Please always use Studio 1 for your entrance and exit, as Studio 2 will be the exam venue and must not be disturbed.
  • The rest of Village Walk is closed on Sundays, only main gates at the car park will be unlocked.
  • Students must arrive ready and on the dot of their arrival time. Each set will be brought out to parents in the courtyard after their exam finishes.

Child Protection Policy

This is the Child Protection Policy for Acro Dance Studios Ltd as of 1st January 2018

It comprises seven sections:

  • Introduction

  • Recruitment and training of staff and volunteers
  • Responding to allegations or suspicions


Acro Dance Studios recognises that in common with all organisations which make provision for children and young people it must ensure that:

  • The safety of the child is paramount
  • All children, whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs and/or sexual identity have the right to protection from abuse;
  • All suspicions and allegations of abuse and poor practice will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately;
  • All those working in the organisation in whatever capacity whether as paid staff, managers, trustees or volunteers have a responsibility to report concerns to the appropriate officer.
  • It recognises that Staff and volunteers are not trained to deal with situations of abuse or to decide if abuse has occurred.

Policy statement/aims

Acro Dance Studios has a duty of care to safeguard all children involved at Acro Dance Studios from harm. All children have a right to protection, and the needs of the particularly vulnerable must be taken into account. Acro Dance Studios will ensure the safety and protection of all children involved through adherence to the Child Protection guidelines adopted by Acro Dance Studios, and has issued a Child Protection Policy 1st January 2018. A child is defined as a person under the age of 18 years (The Children and Young Persons Act 2001).

Policy aims

The aim of Acro Dance Studios Child Protection Policy is to promote good practice:

  • Providing children and young people with appropriate safety and protection whilst in the care of Acro Dance Studios
  • Allow all staff to make informed and confident responses to specific child protection issues

Promoting Good Practice

Abuse can occur within many situations including the home, school, the Third Sector and the sporting environment. A teacher, will have regular contact with young people and all suspicious cases of poor practice by those working within the organisation, will be reported following the guidelines in this document.

When a child enters into any of our activities having been subjected to child abuse in another environment, we will work with the appropriate agencies to ensure the child receives the required support.

Everyone at Acro Dance Studios is encouraged to demonstrate exemplary behaviour to promote child safety and reduce the likelihood of allegations being made.

Good practice means:

  • Treating all young people and with respect and dignity;
  • Always putting the safety of each young person first;
  • Building balanced relationships based on mutual trust which empowers children to share in the decision-making process;
  • Making our activities fun, enjoyable and promoting fair play;
  • Ensuring that physical support required will be provided openly.
  • Maintaining professional spotting techniques;
  • Keeping up to date with technical skills, qualifications and insurance relevant to activities undertaken;
  • Involving parents/carers wherever possible. For example, chaperoning at performances.
  • Giving enthusiastic and constructive feedback rather than negative criticism;
  • Recognising the developmental needs and capacity of young people avoiding excessive involvement or competition and not pushing them against their will;
  • Securing parental consent in writing to act in loco parentis, if the need arises to administer emergency first aid and/or other medical treatment;
  • Keeping a record of any injury that occurs, along with details of any treatment;

Practices never to be sanctioned

The following should never be sanctioned. You should never:

  • Engage in rough, physical or sexually provocative games, including horseplay;
  • Share a room with a child;
  • Allow or engage in any form of inappropriate touching;
  • Allow children to use inappropriate language unchallenged;
  • Make sexually suggestive comments to a child, even in fun;
  • Reduce a child to tears as a form of control;
  • Fail to act upon and record any allegations made by a child;
  • Do things of a personal nature for children that they can do for themselves;
  • Invite or allow children to stay with you at your home unsupervised.

N.B. It may sometimes be necessary for staff or volunteers to do things of a personal nature for children. These tasks should only be carried out with the full understanding and consent of parents and the individuals involved.

Incidents that must be reported/recorded

If any of the following occur it will be reported immediately to the appropriate officer and record the incident, also making sure parent/carer is notified. If you accidentally hurt a child;

  • If he/she seems distressed in any manner;
  • If he/she appears to be sexually aroused by your actions;
  • If he/she misunderstands or misinterprets something you have done.

Use of photographic/filming equipment

Acro Dance Studios will take the appropriate care when using photos or video content. Consent to the use of photographic and/or filming equipment is sought from parents or the legal guardian of the child before joining Acro Dance Studios and is only ever used for advertising purposes.

Recruitment and training of staff

Acro Dance Studios recognises that anyone may have the potential to abuse children and that all reasonable steps are taken to ensure unsuitable people are prevented from working with children.

  • From time to time, i.e. performance shows, Acro Dance Studios will require additional help in the form of volunteers or chaperones
  • Only female chaperones will be used
  • All staff – full or part time – and parental volunteers have been assessed to elicit information including a self disclosure about any criminal record;
  • A volunteer from outside the parental group will need to supply evidence of identity and a confidential referee, as well as the self disclosure;
  • Our child protection process includes training after recruitment to help staff be able to recognise signs and indicators of abuse;
  • Staff recognise their responsibilities to respond to concerns expressed by a child or young person;
  • Staff recognise their responsibilities to work safely and effectively with children;
  • Relevant personnel have attended a recognised first aid training course;

Responding to allegations or suspicions

There is a responsibility to act on any concerns by reporting these to the appropriate officer or the appropriate authorities. Acro Dance Studios will assure all staff will fully support and protect anyone that reports his or her concern over potential child abuse including that a colleague is, or may be, abusing a child. Where there is a complaint against a member of staff there may be different types of investigation – a disciplinary or misconduct, a criminal or a child protection investigation.

Action if there are concerns

Any suspicion that a child has been abused by either a member of staff or a volunteer should be reported to Acro Dance Studios, who will take such steps as considered necessary to ensure the safety of the child in question and any other child who may be at risk. If the allegation is clearly about poor practice; Acro Dance Studios will deal with it as a misconduct issue.


Every effort will be made to ensure that confidentiality is maintained for all concerned. Information should be handled and disseminated on a need to know basis only including:

  • The studios;
  • The parents /carers of the person who is alleged to have been abused;
  • The person making the allegation;
  • Social Services/Police.

Information should be stored securely with limited access, in line with data protection laws.

Internal enquiries and suspension

Acro Dance Studios will make an immediate decision about whether any individual accused of abuse should be temporarily suspended pending further police and social services inquiries. The safety of the child should remain of paramount importance throughout. Support to deal with the aftermath of abuse may be sought from local groups:

Allegations of previous abuse

Allegations of abuse may be made some time after the event. Where such an allegation is made, Acro Dance Studios will follow procedures and report the matter to the Social Services or the Police.

Action if bullying suspected

Acro Dance Studios takes all cases of bullying very seriously. Action taken to help the victim and prevent bullying in our organisation:

  • Encourage all children to speak and share their concerns.
  • Help the victim to speak out and tell the person in authority.
  • Investigate all allegations and take action to ensure the victim is safe. Speak with the victim and the bully(ies) separately.
  • Reassure the victim that you can be trusted and will help them, although you cannot promise to tell no one else.
  • Keep records of what is said (what happened, by whom, when).
  • Report any concerns to the Club Child Protection Officer or the school (wherever the bullying is occurring).

Action towards the bully(ies):

  • Talk with the bully(ies), explain the situation, and try to get them understand the consequences of their behaviour. Seek an apology to the victim(s).
  • Inform the bully’s parents.
  • Provide support for any staff or volunteers involved with the victim.
  • Impose sanctions as necessary.
  • Encourage and support the bully(ies) to change behaviour.
  • Inform all organisation members of action taken.
  • Keep a written record, and inform all staff of action taken.
  • Most ‘low level’ incidents will be dealt with at the time by staff and /or volunteers. However, if the bullying is severe (e.g. a serious assault), or if it persists despite efforts to deal with it, incidents should be referred to Acro Dance Studios as in “responding to suspicions or allegations” above.

Information for Social Services or the Police about suspected abuse

A record will always be made at the time of the disclosure/concern, which should include the following:

  • The child’s name, date of birth, home address and telephone number.
  • Whether or not the person making the report is expressing their own concerns or those of someone else.
  • The nature of the allegation, including dates, times and any special factors.
  • Make a clear distinction between what is fact, opinion or hearsay.
  • Description of visible bruising or other injuries, but also any indirect signs, such as behavioural changes.
  • Details of witnesses to the incidents.
  • The child’s account of what has happened and how any bruising occurred.
  • Have the parents been contacted? If so what has been said?
  • Has anyone else been consulted? If so record details.
  • If the child was not the person who reported the incident, has the child been spoken to? If so what was said?
  • Has anyone been alleged to be the abuser? Record details.
  • Where possible referral to the Police or Social Services should be confirmed within 24 hours and the contact who took the referral should be recorded.

Visitors to our website

When someone visits our website we collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site and we collect this information in a way which does not identify anyone.

We do not make any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our site and we will not associate any data gathered from this site with any personally identifying information from any source.

If we do want to collect personally identifiable information through our website, we will be up front about this and make it clear when we ask you for your consent and permission to collect your personal information. This includes an explanation of what we intend to do with such information.

Your Rights

Your rights are important to us, if you wish to; access, update, restrict, remove, object to or no longer want hear from us, we will take action and make sure the appropriate steps are taken to ensure we fulfil your request.


When we receive a complaint from a person we make up a file containing the details of the complaint. This normally contains the identity of the complainant and any other individuals involved in the complaint.

We will only use the personal information we collect to process the complaint and to check on the level of service we provide. We will keep personal information contained in complaint files in line with our company retention policy. This means that information relating to a complaint will be retained for 2 years from closure. It will be retained in a secure environment and access to it will be restricted according to the ‘need to know’ principle.

Similarly, where enquiries are submitted to us we will only use the information supplied to us to deal with the enquiry and any subsequent issues and to check on the level of service we provide.
